I figured I might as well post this since I've been getting into a few projects for my group. I find its awesome see my favouriet videos on a DVD compilation. So below are some programs that I'm sure you guys have heard before but feel free to post other ways to go about authoring your own DVD's (No this isn't about ripping/copying regular DVD's) Also, please let me know of other Authoring applications you think I should try. I wanna try other new stuff too
So far I've tried Ulead DVD products and besides their player, the authoring tools aren't very good. A lot of skipping/timing and delay issues with the final product. Menus are very basic.
I'm currently using Adobe Encore and at first, like any Adobe product it has a learning curve to get up. Not as big as Photoshop or Premiere (thankfully) but its worth the curve. Many options are available and being an adobe product it has cross compatibility with photoshop and after effects for moving menu buttons and great menu backgrounds. So if you know after effects and photoshop, you can add some sweet buttons and background to your DVD menu.
The menu configuration is extensive. You can have video backgrounds on your menus as well as with sound or without as you choose. Heck, you can have your buttons be mini previews of your sections.
The one thing about Encore is that from what I have experienced in my projects, your video files that you import MUST be a certain resolution in order for Encore to accept them. Because of that I run all my files through TMPGEnc and get the file converted to .m2v files at the proper resolution. I supposed you could also use Vdub but I'm not as sure how to go about it through vdub.
Once you import it you can also import other pictures or .psd files to add as menu buttons, backgrounds or objects. You also have control over your video timelines and you can do small sound and video editing in the timelines which make up your DVD movie(s). You can pretty much edit any option in your dvd such as which order the cursor over your buttons will go when you press next on your DVD remote.
From my experience the exporting and burning process takes a decent time as opposed to a long time which other DVD programs tend to do (Arc Soft DVD SLideshow).
So thats mine, what do you use? What works and what should we avoid?
